Important “to-do” items can be subsumed by the ongoing rush, leaving an empty feeling at the end of the day that little was seemingly accomplished.

An April 22 workshop will teach business owners how to regain control using a simple motto: “The system is the solution.” By identifying and implementing a system that matches their operation, business owners can operate more effectively and reconnect with their original passion for the company.

The workshop is the first of six monthly Growth Coach seminars addressing the needs of business owners.

“With all the daily demands of running a business, many owners can easily get bogged down by distractions and ‘got-a-minute’ interruptions,” said Gwen Nelson, owner of The Growth Coach and a veteran small business owner and adviser. “This workshop will help them refocus on developing a system that will maximize productivity and efficiency, and put them back in control where they should be.”

Designing a business to be more systems-oriented can produce predictable and consistent results, Nelson added. As a result, owners can think more strategically and long-term.

Other seminars in the series will address marketing, sales, effective management, using technology and developing a business exit strategy. Each workshop is $29. Participants can save $70 by registering for the entire series by April 20.

Registration and more information are available by calling (262) 939-1554.

They work. They pay in. They retire. They collect benefits.

In truth, Social Security offers many opportunities for retired workers to supplement their income further. A well-planned strategy can increase the benefit levels that recipients get from the longstanding federal program.

“Savvy Social Security Planning,” will examine strategies to boost Social Security income under the program’s benefit guidelines. The seminar will examine how payments are calculated and the effect of other income on benefits.

“Most workers pay into Social Security all their lives and plan to collect benefits immediately upon retiring,” said Terry Jannsen, CPA and President of Jannsen & Company, S.C., who will lead the seminar. “However, for those willing to consider alternative strategies, Social Security offers many opportunities to build a greater benefit down the road while still collecting income to maintain their lifestyle.”

For example, few probably know that any spouse – even divorced spouses – can collect 50 percent of the benefit on their spouse’s record. By collecting just this benefit upon retirement, and delaying collection of their full personal benefit for a few years, retirees can realize a significant gain in their final benefit levels.

The April 28 seminar is free, but attendees are asked to donate $10 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Reservations are requested, and can be made by calling Darlene at (262) 513-9292.

The site is pleased to announce that it will host a lecture by nationally-renowned sampler expert and patternmaker Eileen Bennett. Bennett is the author of seven books, including 2001’s “The Evolution of Samplers: Embroidery and Sampler Time Line.”

Bennett, of Jenison, Michigan, will speak on the social significance of samplers over the centuries, as well as her pet project, the Michigan Sampler Survey. With this survey, Bennett hopes to record information related to all historic samplers in the state of Michigan, including their current location and provenance. The results of this project will be invaluable to both serious researchers and casual enthusiasts for generations to come—and Bennett hopes a similar survey might take root in Wisconsin.

Furthermore, in celebration of its 2010 focus on the sewing arts, the Historic Indian Agency House will introduce its latest gift shop addition: a sewing kit based on the circa-1828 Priscilla Griffiths sampler that hangs in the Kinzie bedroom of the historic house. This kit, painstakingly reproduced by Ms. Bennett and including all materials, makes it possible to recreate this historic and beautiful sampler for your own home.

The doors of the site will open at 12PM, with plenty of time to take in the exhibit and even a guided tour of the historic Agency House before the 2PM featured speaker takes the stage. Light seasonal refreshments will be available to all guests. This event is free to the public (although the guided tour fee still applies) and made possible by a generous grant from the Great Circle Foundation, Inc. of East Northport, New York.

Mother\'s Day at the Farm

Our critters celebrate their Moms by inviting your Mom to the farm free!

The event will take place May 16th at 2PM, featuring a cultural demonstration by Ho-Chunk youth groups, Wasira Dance Troupe and United Clans Drum Group. The talented members of these groups, ages K-12th grade, aim to spread awareness of their Native American heritage through song and dance. A pie and dessert social will follow the demonstration, made possible by generous local businesses and other volunteers.
Bring your folding chair or a blanket and settle in for some family fun! The event is free to the public, with donations benefitting the continued operation of the Agency House gladly accepted. Yet with so many options available – from traditional print advertising to social media and blogging – many business owners might be unsure where to begin.

“Marketing: What’s Your Plan?” will explore different marketing options and how they fit – or don’t fit – for individual businesses. The focus will be on identifying marketing practices that help businesses generate consistent revenue, regardless of economic trends or passing fads.

It’s the second of six monthly Growth Coach seminars aimed at helping business owners think strategically and plan ahead for growth.

“No business owner can get in front of each and every prospect in their marketplace,” said Gwen Nelson, owner of The Growth Coach and a veteran small business owner and adviser. “That’s why marketing is so important. Marketing helps raise market awareness and keep sales going. The challenge is knowing where to invest time and money to achieve the greatest results.”

The workshop will explain how to create a marketing plan that fits a business and “systematizes” its marketing outreach, Nelson said. A panel of experts will offer ideas and commentary throughout the event. All attendees registered by May 18 will receive a free one-hour coaching session on business management and growth.

Each seminar in the Growth Coach series is $29. Registration and more information are available by calling (262) 939-1554. Future workshops will address sales, effective management, using technology and developing a business exit strategy.

While online identity theft gets a great deal of attention, the vast majority of identity theft occurs when mail is stolen, personal papers are recovered from trash, or fraudulent phone calls entice people to reveal personal information. Victims of identity theft often are unable to recover funds stolen from bank accounts, and may be liable for amounts charged fraudulently on their credit accounts. They usually spend untold amounts of time and money reclaiming their identity and credit-worthiness.

“This seminar will explain what identity theft is and the many ways it occurs,” said Terry Jannsen, CPA and President of Jannsen & Company, S.C. “As with any other crime, you cannot completely control whether you will be victimized, but you can minimize your risk. This seminar will detail how a person’s identity can be compromised, how people can protect themselves, and what they should do if their identity is stolen.”

Identity theft and fraud crimes have increased by about 20 percent annually in recent years, according to the Federal Trade Commission, with national losses in the billions of dollars. The best way for consumers to protect themselves is to know the methods used by identity thieves, and act accordingly.
